Brendan scoops medal at North Leinster Aquatics Event.

DkIT Caretaker Brendan kerley continues to bring home the gold and silver as he scooped another medal at the North Leinster Aquatics event held in Drogheda recently.

DKIT students take part in ground-breaking Ablevision project

Students from the 2nd year of the BA in Video & Film Production are currently working alongside students from the Certificate in Skills for Independent Living in the creation of a short TV studio show.

“Bringing it all Back Home? Debt Crises - from the Global South to Europe”

Dr. Andy Storey of the School of Politics, UCD will present at a Lunchtime Seminar entitled “Bringing it all Back Home? Debt Crises - from the Global South to Europe” on November 3oth at 1.pm in the Nursing Building ( N122).

More festival screenings for Solaria

Solaria, a short film made by Darren O'Connor, John Hoey, Rossa O'Dowd and Craig Broughton as part of their 4th year Practice-Based Research project on the BA(Hons)in Video & Film Production last year has announced further screenings.

Enterprise Ireland launches €60k contest for students

Enterprise Ireland has launched a €60,000 entrepreneurial contest for students as part of the 30th 'Think outside the Box Awards' competition.

DkIT Mens Basketball Win All-Ireland Shield

On Saturday morning DKIT Basketball Fresher's team travelled to the All-Ireland Fresher's Tournament hosted by IT Carlow. It had 13 Men's teams competing along with 12 women's over two days with Cup and Plates up for grabs.

Dundalk IT Senior Hurlers advance to semi-final of Division 3 League.

Opening points from Adrian Wallace, Derek Horan, Danny Maguire gave DKIT a good start in this entertaining game against Queens University Belfast in St.Colmans college in Newry.

A well taken goal from Maguire kept the Dundalk men in contention at half-time trailing by 2 points.

Issue 9

Project seeks to record 'local histories' of the peace process

Hundreds of untold stories about the peace process are just waiting to be recorded.

That is the view of a group of leading academics currently undertaking a €1.1 million oral history project supported by the EU's PEACE III programme. As part of the Peace Process, Layers of Meaning project, experts will provide training and instruction to individuals and communities to help them to accurately record their accounts and recollections for future generations.

Dancing at Lughnasa Opening Next Week 23rd to 26th November 7.30pm each night at the Mac Anna Theatre

B.A. Performing Arts are proud to present Brian Friel's 'Dancing at Lughnasa' for four nights next week, 23rd to 26th November, at the newly dedicated Mac Anna Theatre, (formerly the Blackbox theatre).

Increase in Mature Student Numbers at DkIT

Mature students now represent just over 20% of first-year student numbers at DkIT. 20% represents the target to be reached by 2013 as set by the Higher Education Authority in the National Plan for Equity of Access to Higher Education 2008-2013. Mature students are registered on a broad range of programmes and contribute a wealth of experience to the learning experience of all on campus.

Karin Leitner: recital and master class (flute)

Viennese flautist Karin Leitner will give a recital and master class this Thursday (17th) in the Fr McNally Recital Room at 2.30 pm. She will be accompanied on piano by music lecturer Anthony Norton. Leitner will then give a master-class to the undergraduate classical groups. All welcome.

Riding the waves of success: OpenHydros guest speaking event

The engineering students of DkIT got a welcome treat on Tuesday 15th November as one of the local leading employers in the renewable energy sector came to give the students a talk. Manufacturing manager Niall O'Callaghan presented the up and coming technology of tidal energy systems which are being developed in Greenore.

DkIT Library's Digital Photography competition.

The library is offering a €30 Marshes voucher to the winner of their photography competition.

The competition is open to students and staff of DkIT.

The theme of the competition is 'My Library 'and is how you see and experience DkIT Library.

Student Assistance Fund

Just a little reminder about the Student Assistance Fund. If, because of any changes in your circumstances, you find yourself in severe financial hardship, you can apply for the Student Assistance Fund.

Archery Bake Sale

The Archery Bake Sale which took place outside the MPC on Monday the 8th November. The Fund Raising Committee organised the event and was lead by Dave Maine a 4th Year Performing Arts Student.

Andy Pollak, Director of the centre for Cross Border Studies delivered an inspirational speech at Conferring 2011 in DkIT.

DkIT theatre dedicated to Tomás Mac Anna as Dancing at Lughnasa opens

 

A performance space on the Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) campus is being named Mac Anna Theatre in recognition of the work in Irish theatre of Dundalk man Tomás Mac Anna who died earlier this year, aged 87.

Denis Cummins, President DkIT addressed graduates and their families at DkIT's 40th anniversary year Conferring ceremonies.

Recent Retirements

Seamus Kelly retired on 30th September and a small, but highly efficient committee, organised a very enjoyable evening in Byrne's pub where Seamus was joined by colleagues past and present, all there to wish him a long and happy retirement. Hot on Seamus's retirement heels was Gerry Cluskey who also retired on the same day! Peter Carolan had retired earlier in the summer while Gerry Woods claims the distinction of being the most recent retiree.

The Peter Rice Competition

The Peter Rice medal competition took place in DkIT on Wednesday 26th October. The event was organised by Sinead Kelly from the School of Engineering and was run in conjunction with Engineers Ireland North East region. The Peter Rice medal commemorates the local Dundalk man, who was one of Ireland's outstanding structural engineers and the award is made annually to the best presented Level 7 Engineering student project in DkIT.

Don't drop out, drop in!

We are running scheduled drop-in workshops in our new purposely designed Information Skills room to help students and staff make the most of all the resources and services available to them through DkIT Library.

DkIT Senior footballers defeated by Letterkenny IT.

DkIT senior footballers crashed out of the league on Monday (7th of November) after an unfortunate 1 point defeat to Letterkenny IT. With 2 and a half hour trip to O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny, the lads were sent home bitterly disappointed after such a close game. The loss ends this semester’s competitive term which has been a disappointing one for the team. But with a very good performance none the less they can look forward to the Trench Cup in February.

Open Day 2011- Sun shone as crowds visited the campus.

Last Friday the sun shone on DkIT as cars and buses carrying prospective students arrived on campus to get a taste of student life here. Schools arrived with Guidance Consellors and families arrived from as far away as Waterford and Galway to experience first hand what DkIT has to offer.

DKIT student documentary to be screened at Darklight Film Festival

The Final Furlong, a documentary created by recent graduates John Hoey, Niamh Woods, Darren O’Connor, Lucy Martin and Francis Gorman has been selected to be screened at the Darklight Film Festival at the end of the month.

Lunch time concert series

Weekly lunch time concerts featuring DkIT top music students will recommence at 1.30 this Thursday the 6th of October. The concerts are held in the new Black Box Theatre and run over the duration of the year.

Launch of new renewable energy course

The Centre for Renewable Energy are happy to announce that DkIT is launching a Certificate in Renewable Energy which awards a Special Purpose Award at HETAC level 6 and will earn 20 ECTS credits on successful completion.

Youth Work Degree Receives Professional Endorsement

The BA (Hons) in Community Youth Work offered by the School of Business & Humanities has gained professional endorsement from the North-South Education and Training Standards (NSETS) committee.

Simon Week 2011 – Believe in People
