DkIT Senior footballers defeated by Letterkenny IT.

A report by Brian Fitzpatrick.

DkIT senior footballers crashed out of the league on Monday (7th of November) after an unfortunate 1 point defeat to Letterkenny IT. With 2 and a half hour trip to O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny, the lads were sent home bitterly disappointed after such a close game.  The loss ends this semester’s competitive term which has been a disappointing one for the team. But with a very good performance none the less they can look forward to the Trench Cup in February.

DkIT started very slowly going 1-02 down before finding their opening score through Paddy O’Rourke. Despite the score line showing otherwise, Dundalk bossed the first half but struggled to convert their dominance to a lead as the half ended at 1-04 to 0-05 to Letterkenny IT.

Dundalk showed their true ability at the start of the second half by pushing on and taking the lead thanks to points from McCann, Clarke and McDonnell. The forward’s job was made a lot easier thanks to the great work from all 6 defenders including the fresher from Meath making his senior debut Neil Shorthall. Dundalk’s good work started to slip in the last few minutes as Letterkenny regained a two point lead late on. Despite DkIT deserving a bit of luck they didn’t get any when a long ball was played in by Shorthall and was missed by the goalkeeper only to bounce over the bar rather than in the goal. This proved to be the last chance for the lads and the 160 km trip was made longer with the bitter disappointment of defeat. The full time score was LYIT 1-10 DkIT 0-12.
