The volunteers will be based in Mbeya which is located in the Southern highlands of Tanzania and the group will be hosted by a local Tanzanian NGO 'Uvikiuta' for the duration of the assignment. The volunteers will be joined by 6 Tanzanians and together they will work on a number of activities which have been identified by the local community as priority areas in their community. The main objective of the assignment will be bringing the community together (in particular young people) to address and discuss issues which affects their community. To this end, the volunteers will take part in activities such as: organising sport activities to attract young people to participate in the community; renovating a local health clinic and assisting local facilitators in conducting workshops to raise awareness about drugs and alcohol abuse & HIV/AIDS.

DkIT President Denis Cummins met the volunteers last week and wished them well both with the assignment and fundraising (each volunteer needs to raise €2,000). Denis also commended the DkIT VS Committee in establishing the Society and spoke about how it will provide opportunities for the volunteers and communities to share and develop skills as well as generating a greater understanding and awareness of different cultures and societies both in Ireland and abroad.

We would like to wish the volunteers the best of luck in Tanzania and look forward to hearing about their experience in September!!
