Dundalk Institute attends UCAS Higher Education Convention.

Dundalk Institute of Technology attended the UCAS Higher Education Convention which took place in Belfast's King's Hall on Wednesday and Thursday past. Great interest was shown, particularly in Nursing, Engineering, Business, PR, Accounting, Computing and Music Courses offered in DkIT. The convention organised by UCAS is the largest Higher Education Convention to take place in Northern Ireland every year and is organised in conjunction with The Department of Employment and Learning in Northern Ireland and in association with HELOA. In total over 8000 students who will be applying for Third Level Colleges in 2013 attended the event over the two days. Students came from all over Northern Ireland and also included a few students from Southern Ireland.

Southern Colleges who attended the event included Trinity, IT Sligo, DCU, NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth, Dublin Business School, Griffith College and Dundalk Institute of Technology. In total there were over 250 exhibitors at the event, including a large number of Universities and Colleges from England, Scotland and Wales as well as the Northern Ireland Universities including Queen's University of Ulster, Stranmillis, Belfast Metropolitan College and St Mary's University College.

All Southern Colleges at the event reported an increase in the interest from students, mainly put down to the increase in tuition fees in Northern Ireland and in the UK for attending University. Northern Students are now looking towards the South, where there are no tuition fees. It would be estimated that DkIT had at least 3 to 4 times the number of enquiries compared to previous years, with a lot of the students coming to the exhibition stand knowing what we had to offer and just looking for more information.

DkIT Schools Liaison Office, along with a number of departments within Dundalk Institute have been doing a lot of work with schools in the Northern area over the last 12 to 18 months. Informing students, parents and teachers of what courses and facilities Dundalk Institute has to offer. That we offer courses from Degree level through to Postgrad and Masters Level, that we are a third level education provider, within a very easy commute for people living in certain parts of Northern Ireland.

Students were provided with prospectuses, relevant course information as well as being told about student life, sports scholarships, how to get to DkIT, campus accommodation, etc.

Thanks to Geraldine McDaid, Fergal Smith, Shane Hill, Paula Reilly, Diarmuid Cahill and David Getty for helping out at the exhibition stand over the two days. There are pictures from the event on the School Liaison Facebook page: ThinkDkIT.
