Car Free Day

As part of Green Week we are asking people to not take the car to College on Thursday 15th of March.

According to our most recent travel survey 82% of staff and 54% of students travel to DkIT by car. Of that percentage around 60% live within a 10 km radius of the College and could potentially walk, cycle or take public transport to DkIT.

Walking or cycling is not just better for your health but can also save you money. Check out how much it costs to use your car to get to DkIT here

In order to make it easier to make the switch to non-car options we are offering

a free bike lock to the first 5 people to send an email to Suzanne Mulholland (

In addition on Thursday the 15th of March Matthews Coach Hire are offering the first 5 DkIT students or staff who board the coach leaving Dublin at 7.30 am and Drogheda at 8.20 am a FREE RETURN Ticket for that day only (Valid for travel on the 15th March). A valid DKIT Student or Staff card must be presented and each student or staff member must quote GREEN WEEK DUNDALK.

Within Dundalk Halfpenny's Coaches are also offering free tickets on Thursday to DkIT students and staff as follows 10 free one way tickets between 8 .00 – 9.00 am , 5 free tickets between 4 – 5.00 pm on Thursday .

We have calculated that through travel to College DkIT staff and students produced an estimated 1,800 tonnes of CO2 in 2011. This is equivalent to the weight of 300 elephants!

While comparisons between the survey carried out in 2006 and the transport survey of 2011 suggest a trend towards less car use the impact of the trend is mitigated by the increased numbers of people coming to DkIT each day.

This year we are also running a Transport Survey to see if the various schemes put in place such as the Bike To Work scheme and Travel Saver Tickets are impacting on travel patterns. If you have not participated in this years survey yet there is still time so please go to and fill it out!
