DkIT welcome PayPal jobs boost for Dundalk as boost to graduates

Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) has welcomed the announcement by PayPal that it is to create 1,000 jobs in Dundalk over the next four years. The leading online payments provider which already employs well over 1,200 people at Blanchardstown, Dublin, is to locate a major operation in Dundalk from which customers in Europe, Middle East and Africa will be served.

With recruitment set to commence in summer, Denis Cummins, President, DkIT, said: "The employment boost for the northeast region announced by An Taoiseach today is tremendously welcome at a time of real economic challenges. "From this Institute's perspective, we are particularly pleased that our graduates – particularly those with foreign language skills - will have opportunities to compete for employment within the region. The career opportunities provided by multinationals like PayPal are very exciting and offer scope to quickly advance by applying skills in disciplines as diverse as technology; accountancy and marketing."

Andrew Griffith, Chairman, Governing Body, DkIT, added: "We understand Dundalk won this inward investment in the face of stiff competition from other Irish and – particularly – overseas locations. That is a tribute to the work that has been done by a wide group of stakeholders to promote the town and Co Louth more widely in recent years and DkIT is pleased to contribute to that. That work is more important than ever during an economic downturn and it is great to see the effort bearing fruit with this project.

"The presence in Dundalk of a global brand such as PayPal can also help to generate additional economic activity over time – both in terms of drawing in additional foreign direct investment and creating more employment in indigenous enterprises. It also provides a confidence boost to get this type of vote of confidence from so significant a global enterprise."
