Gavin Duffy to launch 'DkIT Enterprise Week 2012'

For the second year running DkIT Student Enterprise will be running an 'Enterprise Week' starting next Monday, February 20th. The aim of 'DkIT Enterprise Week 2012' will be to help students find out more about enterprise, encourage participation and have fun.

Gavin Duffy, serial entrepreneur and one of the Dragons' on RTE's Dragons' Den will kick off the week in the Whitaker Theatre at 2 p.m. Gavin set out in business at the age of 18 setting up a local radio station, today he now has many interests in the media consultancy business and recruitment. Speaking to the next generation of entrepreneurs Gavin will share his experience of being an entrepreneur and a 'Dragon' on RTE's Dragons' Den. It is an event not to be missed and all students are encouraged to attend.

Launching on the Monday as well will be the renowned 'Rookie Challenge'. The 'Rookie Challenge' has been in existence every year since DkIT Student Enterprise was founded. The challenge is similar to the television show 'The Apprentice' and in teams of three or four, students will be given tasks and will compete against each other to make it to the last eight and then the last four. There can only be one winning team and the prize for this year's competition will be four Tablet Computers. This competition is also an excellent opportunity for students to develop an entrepreneurial spirit and to be involved in activities like the 'Rookie Challenge' is an excellent C.V. builder and can be used as a talking point in an interview. Sign up for this competition will take place on Monday 20th outside the Whitaker Theatre where teams will be presented with their first task.

On Tuesday Gillian Slattery of Enterprise Ireland will be here to talk about the 'Students Think Outside The Box Awards' competition. This event is being organised for students who have expressed an interest in entering the competition that has €30,000 of cash prizes this year. If you or your team are considering entering the competition this year simply contact one of the Student Enterprise Interns to book your place at this event.

Also on Tuesday there will be a guest speaking event in P1053 (the Carroll's Building). Ellen Dudley of and Jason McGee of have being invited to share their experiences of turning their interests into businesses. Ellen developed her own mobile application that is available on the Android Market and the App Store while Jason set up his own website for Web Design and I.T. Consultancy. He also set up Louth Internet Radio.

On Wednesday we will be running a 'Wheelbarrow Race'. The aim of this event is to create awareness of 'Molly Malone – The Student Mobile Shop'. The student mobile shop can be used by the students for free in order to sell or promote their products and services on campus. For more information on the 'Student Mobile Shop' simply find it on Facebook at: This event will be held outside the canteen at 1 p.m.

The semi-final of the 'Rookie Challenge' will take place in the Whitaker Theatre on Wednesday 22nd at 3 p.m. and the final will take place in N128 (Nursing Building) on Thursday 23rd at 4 p.m. All students are welcome to attend.
