DkIT Basketball narrowly defeated in home venue

DkIT lost out by a point in home league game to NUI Maynooth

DkIT 67-68 NUI Maynooth

DkIT's Basketball Team had their first home game of the season which turned out to be a fantastic and tense affair with NUI Maynooth on Wednesday afternoon in the MPC. Again DkIT went into the game with a number of players carrying injuries and this clearly effected their game. The first quarter began slowly for DkIT with not many shots falling for the home side. NUIM got some easy scores at times and DkIT knew they would have problems with the NUIM centre who must have been at least 6'8 tall. NUIM led 16-10 going into the second quarter. This is where the home team found their feet with S. Sanni going on a scoring spree scoring 13 points in this quarter. He was accompanied by A Lawless and J Rafferty with great scorers and C Dillion and C Murray had good defensive displays to put DkIT in front 33-31 at half time.

In the third quarter the teams were very easily matched trading score with score. DkIT welcomed back Kevin Xie after a period away due to study and he showed how valuable he can be with some great defense and acuteness on the offensive end to get easy scores. Though DkIT struggled with the big centre inside for NUIM who always managed to ease the pressure for his side by getting good scores at crucial times. Going into the final quarter NUIM had a three point advantage and they added to that with good play and this put alot of pressure on DkIT as the clock was winding down fast. Going into the last two minutes DkIT were down 8 points and needed scores quickly and managed to get two three pointers from J Rafferty and S Sanni which cut the deficit to 3 as NUIM managed a score and free throw. With only 10 seconds remaining DkIT needed the ball back so had to foul to put NUIM on the free throw line and hope they miss. They managed one score but the clock was massively against DkIT with only two seconds remaining and from the time out DkIT managed a three from A Lawless but it wasn't to be DkIT's day as they lost by one point. Today was a another positive day for DkIT as they proved to themselves and to the crowd watching that they can now put it up to the A rated Universities when they apply themselves to the task. This defeat makes it more difficult to make the semi finals of the league but the team won't stop trying!
